Jeff,
Easy step by step instructions can be found in any library. In a nutshell, though:
1. Disconect fuel line (under left side of tank, from petcock to carb; feeds in horizontally; largest hose).
2. Disconect vacuum hose (same basic location; may have metal "spring" wrapping around it; feeds in vertically; crosses in front of carb to right side).
3. Disconnect speedo cable (right side of engine- there are 2 cables coming down from under the tank, it is the all-metallic one) (the other is your clutch cable) (unscrew base from top of engine/tranny case, lift out).
4. Remove front seat (1 screw under each rear corner of seat). Lift off seat.
5. Unscrew seat bracket at back of gas tank. The 2 screws not only hold the bracket, they also anchor the tank.
6. Remove bracket and rubber bushings.
Note: This next part usually scratches the frame a bit (right by the petcock). If it does, welcome to the club, if not, good. And don't pussyfoot around with this either, put some muscle into it. The front of the tank is mounted to two rubber bushings- they won't break, but it may feel like you are bending something- that is normal.
7. Stand on the left side of the bike. Firmly grasping the back of the tank, jam it to the left (towards you) and up. The goal is to get the petcock around and above the frame.
8. Slide the tank back and off the rubber bushings, but don't go to far.
9. There is a quick disconnect for the electronics- undo that (it may help to have an assistant for the first time you do this).
10. Lift the tank off (all the unhooked stuff- speedo, elctronics, vacuum hose- will follow) and try to remember where everything went.
11. Installation is pretty much the reverse.
